It will not be necessary to add anything to the exterior sealant. This should be applied during the construction of the house especially if you live in an area that is prone to heavy rains, flooding or hurricanes.

Exterior sealants are commonly used to protect the foundations of structures that are under construction. In the recent past, there has been an evolution of the exterior basement waterproofing and today it can combine the use of an exterior membrane on the external underground foundation or wall together with a French drain.  This method can be effective in construction projects but is not suitable for use as a retrofit remedy since it doesn’t involve exterior excavation to the foundation’s bottom. Also, there are certain kinds of French drains that can become clogged as a result of the ingress of the surrounding soil and slit.

How To Fix Bubbles in Epoxy Floors

Bubbles formation is common in epoxy floors, i noticed that during several floor and foundation repair project i have handled for my clients. They are usually observed to be the size of a pinhead or even more than an inch in diameter. Bubbles can be found in the entire floor or as a group. Most times, they are caused by air being trapped in the flooring and this is usually due to an occurrence called ‘out gassing’. Usually, this happens when the epoxy begins to dry up. It is the rise in temperature that causes heating of the air in the concrete, thereby making it expand and form bubbles.

In order to prevent bubbles from being formed in epoxy floors, it is recommended that primer should be applied.

Also, do not apply the coating in direct rays of the sun and make sure to always use a drill of a slower speed when you are mixing the coating.

It is better to use a medium roller of you intend to use a roIler to apply the coating. Apply the epoxy very slowly in a gentle motion. This helps in preventing bubbles from being formed in epoxy coatings.

You can remove the bubbles formed in epoxy floorings by using grit sandpaper and a rotary scrubber. Firstly, you have to roughen the bubbled area with the sandpaper. Then meticulously clean the dust. After this, use a rag to wipe the surface area with a strong solvent. Then, you can apply another coating.

Fisheyes is another type of bubble observed. These types are mostly caused by residual silicon on the surface and also by oil and grease, fats etc.

You can clean this by scrubbing the surface area with a medium grit sandpaper. Then, scrupulously clean the area with a rag dipped in solvent. You can now apply a fresh coating after this.

You can consider sand blasting or shot blasting if there are bubbles in the entire epoxy flooring area. First, you have to remove the epoxy coating by sand blasting the entire area. Then, clean the problem area with acid. If the affected area is very small, it can be treated in isolation. All the coating from this area should be removed. Repair the area and then reapply the coating.

Another thing that causes formation of bubbles in epoxy floorings is excessive moisture. To confirm this, break one of the blisters formed and check if there is any moisture inside.

Another type of bubbles is called ‘blisters’. They usually contain foul smelling water rich in minerals and are formed due to differences in minerals and chemicals in a liquid. You can avoid this by using a floor coating which allows air to pass through. Also, They can be removed by sealing the cement first with a thin epoxy sealer.
